Oh yeah, I know this has been a pain for quite some time in various players. Things like Xine just send out keyboard events every several seconds to imitate user activity. The best implementation I'm aware of is in Totem; it doesn't work when Totem is launched with root privileges, but it's not a good thing to do with a video player. Aside of that it seems to be fine.
