I get this problem too when trying to access sites using https. One example is http://
I have had this problem for about a the last week after I upgraded to the latest version of Firefox 1.5 on my laptop. I also have a desktop machine which I upgraded yesterday. I had expected to get the same problem here after upgrading, but on this machine Firefox continued to work. These two machines should have approximately the same software installed. Both run Dapper and the only differences is that I have fewer packages installed on the desktop machine compared to my laptop.

John, this was an excellent suggestion. The only extension I had installed was "QuickProxy". I am not normally running through a proxy, only from work. So the proxy was not involved when I saw this problem.
I tried disabling "QuickProxy" and now I am able to connect to the web pages that have given the error message for the last week. Then I enabled it again, and expected that the problem would re-appear. But it did not. So now everything seems like it works - even with QuickProxy.
John Vivirito (gnomefreak) wrote : | #19 |
Olav Thank you for testing that for me. Im going to wait a while to see if everyone else can test this. I will attemp installing quickProxy and see if i can duplicate this issue. Have any websites i can use as tests? that were failing for you?

I had the same problem on my parents computer running Dapper. I couldn't access some https sites.
I fixed it doing:
apt-get install --reinstall firefox libnspr4 libnss3
Too bad I didn't spend more time troubleshooting, but I needed https to work... Even the launchpad URL for this issue I couldn't browse.
I have some more information though. I noticed that while the issue was there, no master certificates (authorities) would be listed under the tab that supposedly displays them in the preferences panel. Once fixed, the list of authorities appeared again.
Things I would advice if someone else encounters the issue, before applying the fix above:
- start firefox from the terminal when you still have the issue. Maybe it will print a warning/error here.
- try creating a new profile and see if the issue is also available.
- run
ldd /usr/lib/
before and after the reinstall, save and compare each results
- make a backup of the firefox libs (cp -ar /usr/lib/firefox ~/firefox-backup) before doing the apt-get thingy and compare it to the new install)
Hope that helps...

I had the same problem before and I recommended to do some tests.
Maybe you can try these:
- start firefox from the terminal when you still have the issue. Maybe
it will print a warning/error here.
- run
ldd /usr/lib/
find /usr/lib/firefox/ | xargs md5sum
find /usr/lib/firefox/ | xargs ls -la
and give us the outputs.

I just noticed something else beside the fact that Firefox works fine for some users and not for others:
- I cannot update the extensions because the installation folder is read only for (all) normal users
- There are no problems if I run Firefox as sudo.

I am also having the same problem of not being able to browse most HTTPS sites via Firefox, and SSL within Thunderbird is also broken. I believe this is something to do with Ubuntu's networking/secure libraries, however, because I also have VMWare Server installed with Windows XP running as Guest OS and when I launch that and try to browse the same HTTPS sites with Internet Explorer, they are also broken, just like on Firefox in the Host OS (Ubuntu). I have tried re-installing Firefox and the associated libraries as mentioned above ("sudo apt-get install --reinstall firefox libnspr4 libnss3") but this did NOT fix the issue for me. When I run the re-install, I get this message at the end:

Fixed for my case today, by removing the 2 listed DNS servers (from the auto dhcp setup) and adding the router's ip to it instead. All https sites appear to be working now. This system has a static ip. The LAN uses 1 router to connect via dhcp and another router for connecting static ips (to a different service). Thanks for hints above to re-check the DNS..

Any fix for this? I have the same problem on 3 computers at work. It pretty much makes FF useless.
Brad (brad-derolf-deactivatedaccount) wrote : | #62 |
I found this URL which helped correct the problem for me:
http://
However in step 6, I did the opposite:
Deselect Use this proxy server for all protocols.
* If it's not selected, leave it as is. ( I selected it and it corrected my problem)

Thank you for the bug report. It has not been updated after a request for more information in the last 30 days, for this reason we are closing the report. Feel free to reopen it in the future if you have more information and if this is still an issue.

I experience the same problem using Firefox 3.0.14 + Shiretoko FF 3.5.3 on (k)ubuntu 9.04: some sites using SSL cannot be used.
e.g. I cannot download the jdk docs from cds.sun.com site (https:/
(The status bar reports "waiting for cds.sun.com..." forever)
This problem has troubled me since the introduction of FF3 on the linux platform.
I would have asked for help earlier, but this very page also displays "Saving..." forever when reporting a problem using FF.
And even Konqueror reports the following:
"Error The following errors were encountered: 400 Bad Request Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. Apache/2.2.8 (Ubuntu) mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.8g Server at wildcard.
I could download the jdk document on the sun site using Konquerer on the same PC, but not with the Epiphany browser. I was also able to download it with FF 3.5@Windows XP on another PC.
I tried (unsuccesfully) to solve this problem with:
- a clean install of (k)ubuntu 9.04 (incl. deleted ~/.mozilla) ,
- various proxy setting (No / autom. setting),
- all cookies + SSL + TSL were / are enabled
- viewing the error console (no errors reported for this site)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
