Ubuntu Linux 5.04 : The Hoary Hedgehog Release.
If you change the desktop background to say blue, when the gnome desktop loads the default desktop background of Ubuntu (chocolate) appears for a short period of time before changing to blue.
This is really cosmetic in nature but there is also some sort of inefficiency as another background is first loaded before beeing replaced by the correct one.
From the aesthetic perspective it's rather unpleasant to see the chocolate background appear if you have selected a theme that uses a different color palette than the default Ubuntu.

It is gdm that is showing the "Chocolate" background when loading. This is because gdm is set to use that colour by default in Ubuntu.
When you change the background for your users it is only for your users desktop sessions, where as gdm is global i.e. for every user logging in on the system. Changing gdm's background to match the palette of the user is fine in a single user environment but for multi-users it wont work.
If you want to change this for yourself go to System- >Administration ->Login Screen Setup. It can be found on the "GTK+ Greeter" tab.
Cheers,
Dave
