Bug Description

After installing Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot), had some issues with HPLIP. First installed packaged HPLIP to no avail and then tried 3.11.10 to no avail. Reverted ( I think) back to downloaded version of 3.11.7

This seemed to work well for the last week or so, but suddenly yesterday, failed with;

error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1005?serial=BC01MQM
error: Device not found

Some other issues;

1) First off, which version of HPLIP do the developers recommend I should use with Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit? I'm a bit confused at to which I should go for.
2) Consistently, Ubuntu native pdf reader doesn't print. I have now reverted to acroread for Linux which printed well yesterday and then the system stopped on reboot for any other application; LibreOffice, websites, image apps etc. So effectively I cannot print at all.
3) Will I have to just keep reinstalling each time the HPLIP software stops?

Have attached hp-check.log

Thanks in advance

Also, Unity taskbar app repeats three drop down items to read thus;

"HPLIP Status Service
HP LaserJet P1005 Printer (BC01MQM)
HP Device Manager...
HP Device Manager...
Settings...
Settings...
Quit
Quit"

So the options (HP Device Manager, Settings and Quit) are repeated. This has happened each time a version of HPLIP has failed on Ubuntu 11.10 Unity.

Hi,

  Ubuntu 11.10 is not yet supported by HPLIP-3.11.10. It will be supported in HPLIP-3.11.12 which will be released very soon.

Thanks,
Sarbeswar

That's great! Thanks Sarbeswar.

In the meantime, should I just concentrate on getting 3.11.7 working in 11.10?

At the moment, I'm copying files over to a windows netbook and printing from there so it's not a disaster for me. Just awkward. I think I'll invest in a usb printer switch until Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is released and settles (this time next year I reckon) and then hopefully will have a robust system for 2.5 years. That's the plan anyway ;-)

No. Working on HPLIP-3.11.7 for Ubuntu 11.10 is of no use. Please wait for HPLIP-3.11.12 which will be released very soon (in the mid of december).
