Bug Description

While using the Gnome Shell environment in Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome Shell will randomly restart (similar to the 'Alt+F2, then typing r behaviour). I have noted other bugs that say that this occurs , but eventually the desktop does not reload, I have not seen this behaviour occur as Gnome Shell has always reloaded.

This only started affecting me a couple of weeks ago. I have a similar software setup at work and at home but it only affects my work computer. Initially, it only happened when scrolling quickly in LibreOffice (or copying large amounts of data). Then I noticed the crashes also happening when running synaptic, and inserting an equation in gnumeric (it seems to be from the displaying of text completion window).

The fact that in LibreOffice it only happens when I scroll fast, not if I do the same thing slowly makes me thing it may be related to the video drivers, but that's just a guess.

I have a DELL OPTIPLEX 780 with no proprietary drivers installed.
