Bug Description

I was looking to install MESS when I noticed that xmess-sdl was removed from Debian back in the beginning of the year, replaced by mess-sdl built from the mame package. I also noticed that it seems that the Ubuntu mame package is not the same beast, and although a mess package seems to exist according to packages.ubuntu.com, the mame source package doesn't build it. Is there a planned effort to import the mame package from Debian?

Work is in progress, slow but steady due to a number of things happening, including MESS source being now distributed standalone instead of an incremental tarball for the MAME tree.

Since mess is now packaged in Debian as a separate package it will automatically appear in Ubuntu in the next release cycle ( see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebianImportFreeze )
