Bug Description

Hi Alberto,

after every kernel update the dkms mechanism builds the new module but since Ubuntu-Kernel 3.2.0-1-generic (ubuntu 12.04 precise amd64) the module is built but the X-server freezes on startup while trying to load the nvidia-module. Booting with older (pre 3.2) Kernel everything is fine.

Hardware:
Sony Vaio VGN-Z21MN (Z-Series) with Hybrid Graphics
nouveau works but not with the full functionality i need (3d, hdmi, Twin-View..)
The intel graphics chip works as well but does not support hdmi.

regards,
Raphael Gradenwitz

Happens to me with both 3.2.0-1 and 3.2.0-2 using a GTX560 card and nvidia-current (285.05.09-0ubuntu1) drivers. I can reboot to 3.1 kernel and all is fine.

Added an Xorg.0.log.old from a boot attempt where this happened.
The screen gets completely black. No Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-Del or similar is possible, only Force-reset with Power-Button..

I have a similar problem with 12.04 alpha 1, where the screen goes black during boot when X starts when running on a Toshiba Qosmio x505-898 Notebook with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics card. After the screen goes black the only option is to hold the power button down for four seconds to force a hard reset. I do not experience the problem when 11.10 release with the 3.0,0-12 kernel is installed and running on the same computer. The problem seems to be related to the 3.2 Kernel.

nvidia-current-updates, 285.05.09, 3.2.0-2-generic, x86_64: installed

What happens if you uninstall nvidia-current-updates and install nvidia-current instead?

I think you should be using nvidia-current-updates only with oneiric.
