Bug Description

I get the error when I try to install Ubuntu 11.10 i386 from a USB stick.
The installer crashes and I get the pop-up for a bug report.
The installer window says "Configuring apt" at that moment.

I tried installing Ubuntu again using ext3 as file system instead of ext2 on all partitions and it has succeeded this time.

This is the excerpt of the Syslog file where the installation stopped with ext2:

Nov 27 16:38:09 ubuntu ubiquity: umount: /target/cdrom: not found
Nov 27 16:38:09 ubuntu plugininstall.py: log-output -t ubiquity umount /target/cdrom
Nov 27 16:38:09 ubuntu ubiquity: mount: warning: /target/cdrom seems to be mounted read-only.
Nov 27 16:38:09 ubuntu plugininstall.py: log-output -t ubiquity mount --bind /cdrom /target/cdrom
Nov 27 16:38:11 ubuntu ubiquity: open: Input/output error
Nov 27 16:38:11 ubuntu plugininstall.py: log-output -t ubiquity umount /target/cdrom
Nov 27 15:38:11 ubuntu kernel: [ 1243.146585] EXT2-fs (sdb3): error: ext2_new_inode: reserved inode or inode > inodes count - block_group = 0,inode=1
Nov 27 16:38:11 ubuntu ubiquity: grep:
Nov 27 16:38:11 ubuntu ubiquity: /target/etc/apt/sources.list
Nov 27 16:38:11 ubuntu ubiquity: : No such file or directory
Nov 27 16:38:11 ubuntu ubiquity:

That's the Syslog file with ext3:

Nov 28 14:04:07 ubuntu ubiquity: umount: /target/cdrom: not found
Nov 28 14:04:07 ubuntu plugininstall.py: log-output -t ubiquity umount /target/cdrom
Nov 28 14:04:07 ubuntu ubiquity: mount: warning: /target/cdrom seems to be mounted read-only.
Nov 28 14:04:07 ubuntu plugininstall.py: log-output -t ubiquity mount --bind /cdrom /target/cdrom
Nov 28 14:04:09 ubuntu ubiquity: /usr/lib/ubiquity/apt-setup/generators/01setup: 9:
Nov 28 14:04:09 ubuntu ubiquity: cannot open /target/etc/apt/sources.list: No such file
Nov 28 14:04:09 ubuntu ubiquity:
Nov 28 14:04:12 ubuntu in-target: Reading package lists...

and it finishes successfully.

My partitions were set up as following:
/dev/sda1 used as /
/dev/sdb1 used as /home
/dev/sdb2 used as /var
/dev/sdb3 used as /tmp
all formatted as ext2.

The same bug occurs with the current daily build of Ubuntu 12.04.

summary: - Ubuntu installer crashes when "configuring apt" (near the end)
+ Ubuntu installer crashes if ext2 used
