Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

So this is a summary of a set of problems I had when I tried turning on 'desktop-effects'; this is on feisty (dist-upgrade from Edgy, yesterday 3rd March); graphics card is Radeon 7200. I clicked 'enable desktop effects' and just had wobbly windows on, not the cube.
The windows did wobble in a nice fashion - however;

* On restarting X after making the change the contents of the panel weren't rendered and indeed a terminal was rendered blankly.
  - the contents of the panel were there since their tool tips displayed and clicking on them worked - and let me get to the preferences
  to turn desktop effects off.

* With desktop effects enabled I found that on the workspace switcher preferences the number in the box showing the number of workspaces didn't update as I hit up & down - the setting was changed (I could see the extra boxes appearing in the switcher).

* On enabling the desktop effects:
+ the number of desktops dropped from my default of 9 to 4 - and landed a random set of windows from other desktops onto the first one.
+ one of the terminals would no longer accept any input.
+ One or two windows moved in such a way that their title bar was no longer accessible to move them.

* I saw some droppings to the right of wibbling tool tips; a vertical yellow bar about 1 pixel wide, ~10 pixels to the right of the right end of the tooltip - it disappeared after the wibbling stopped.

oops one I forgot; also the window manager with desktop effects on didn't have the new style window actions menu; e.g. it had lost the radio buttons next to the 'always on visible workspace' etc that I had gained between edgy and feisty.

Can confirm the following with nvidia on a zd7000:

Enabled Desktop effect with a maximized firefox window.

 - After enabling desktop effect, panel initially hidden behind maximized firefox window

 - Title Bar for the maximized firefox window is not shown. Additionally, the window displays at the wrong location. It appears to shift up by an amount apparently equal to the height of the panel. Clicks on the windows are also offset, so a click is registered at a spot higher than the spot actually clicked.

Might be worth noting that I've customized my desktop to use only one panel at the top, rather than a panel at both the top and bottom.

Seeing the same with a freshly installed feisty fawn and nvidia pilots with AMD64 version.

Too bad the cube is - for now - dead.

It is the only annoying bug I faced so far ;)

I can confirm the same rendering problems on a ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IGP.
Much of the problems were solved by adding the following to the "Device" section of my xorg.conf:

Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

I'm not sure wether both options are needed.
Totem did still have problems though, the video display area went black. While resizing the window, some images of the movie do appear though.

Hi
Joenix - thanks for that tip; with the 'XAANoOffscreenPixmaps' all the rendering issues have gone for me; Jeroen - where did you get that tip from - it sounds like it needs to be reported as an ATI bug.

Please refile this as separate bug reports for each problem. Megabugs are hard to triage.

Hi,

Dave, I found that tip on some site about installing Beryl. I don't remeber exactly which one, but you can find it for example on the beryl wiki:

Mine is being glitchy too. When I turn on "normal effects" it works fine, but when I turn on "extra effects", the titlebar of every window disappears, and you cannot move windows etc...

Is there a fix for this yet?
