dock sometimes has no icons

Came to my machine this morning, unlocked screensaver and saw this instead of icons in the dock.

killall compiz did not fix it :(

and neither did trying to kill every process with unity in the name. i.e. how on earth do you kick this thing back into behaving without having to log out? grrr

and after logging out and logging back in - the dock is *completely gone* and won't appear when i put my mouse near the side of the screen (nor did it appear when i logged in and no apps were launched).

Looks like a user configuration issue, does running unity --reset fix it?

I restarted the machine and it came back. i.e. nothing to do with my preferences.
