Bug Description

Hy,
 I have a "desktop" problem.I have 5 partitions :1x ntfs(hda1) 1x swap(hda2) 1x reiserfs(hda3) 2x fat32(hda5 & hda6). On my desktop I see hda1 hda6 and what should be hda5 has an ugly name , some random characters. All partition are named correctly in /media so i think its a gnome bug.
I also posted on a forum my problem but nobody knew a solution, there is an attached screenshot: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=374121&highlight=naming+device+bug
ps: I'm using ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft.
pls help.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the output of 'fdisk -l /dev/hda'? Thanks in advance.

I'm terrebly sorry, I switched back to slackware 11, but I can give you some
details about the problem:
I heard its a "character set" problem , when I open device manager I see at
hda5 in the volume section _w
!K{Z! and the same thing apears at info.product and
volume.policy.desired_mount_point and info.product.The other fat32 partition
has an empty string at label , yet in qtparted ( the partitioner) I see at
both partitions "NO NAME".I've tried to mount the partition without utf8
argument , nothing happened.
I oppened a forum topic in hope for a clue:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=374121&highlight=naming+device+bug
There are 2 screenshots and more details.I hope you can solve this.
Once again I'm sorry for not reading my mail earlier. :(

I forgot to atach the output of "fdisk -l /dev/hda":
root@darkstar:~# fdisk -l /dev/hda

Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 650 5221093+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/hda2 651 712 498015 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda3 713 1443 5871757+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 1444 9729 66557295 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda5 1444 5577 33206323+ b W95 FAT32
/dev/hda6 5578 9729 33350908+ b W95 FAT32

I didn't change my partition table, I think the result would be the same
from ubuntu.

There is little we can do about non-UTF8 encodings, I'm afraid, but maybe we could do some better sanity checking.
