Xubuntu 11.10 doesn't remember default browser selection

Bug Description

I like everything about Xubuntu 11.10 except one annoying bug: it doesn't remember my choice of default browser (Google Chrome) and it doesn't remember my keyring password. At every login, I have to re-select Google Chrome as the default, and re-enter my keyring password.

I know that this issue has been raised before, but I have seen no responses to previous inquiries about this issue. (I could have missed them, of course.) I hope someone -- preferably someone from the development team -- will finally respond and let us know when this bug will be fixed.

Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/893321/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

The bug is exhibited when attempting to launch the browser using the web browser launcher on the bottom panel. Whenever I do this upon turning on the laptop, I am presented with the "Choose Preferred Application" dialog.

Running ubuntu-bug-w and clicking on the web browser launcher on the bottom panel identifies the affected package as xfce4-panel 4.8.6-0ubuntu1.

Running ubuntu-bug-w and clicking on the web browser launcher on the "Choose Preferred Application" dialog window identifies the affected package as libexo-1-0-.6.2-2.

Hope this helps.

Just to clarify one point: I am referring in this report to Google Chrome, not the Chromium open source browser.

I have the same problem, but I'm using chromium-browser. update-alternatives confirms that chromium is my choice (made originally in the applications menu Web Browser item, and also in Settings / Choose Preferred Application), but firefox gets started most of the time anyway. Interestingly, chromium also sees that even though I tell it to be my default browser, that setting is defeated and offers to make t again.

I can confirm this behavior in Xubuntu 12.04 as well. Cannot permanently set Chromium as default browser.
