Bug Description

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious - I haven't used Unity in a while - but the logout button doesn't seem to be there anymore. I can switch between users, etc., but not log out.
I've deleted my ~/.gconf directory just in case I had some weird settings - but that didn't help.

Thank you for your bug report, what icon theme do you use? Could you add your .xsession-errors to the bug? Some of the indicators have colored icons which seem to indicate an incorrect theme is used which might lead to a known issue in indicator-session leading to have no power menu since the theme doesn't contain one

I'm not actually sure which theme I'm using; it should be the default, cause I've never changed it. If I open gnome-control-center and go "Appearance", it says the theme is "Ambiance". But I also see error messages like this:
(gnome-control-center:8493): background-cc-panel-WARNING **: Could not load /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/index.theme: No such file or directory

I'm certainly missing lots of icons; I was assuming it was a different bug, but your explanation makes sense.

I've created a new user account, but I'm still missing icons and seeing the same error messages, so it's not a per-user setting. A missing package maybe?

Could you run "gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme", what value does it have? what about gtk-theme? do you have humanity-icon-theme and ubuntu-mono installed?

I have exactly the same problem - no logout button, loads of missing icons in gnome-control-center.
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme
gives
gnome
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme
gives
Ambiance

I have humanity-icon-theme and ubuntu-mono installed

This is on a laptop that had a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and then was upgraded twice through the update manager to the Oneiric.

Thanks, and merry christmas!

This bug affects me. Default installation and themes all installed. Session menu has no logout option and User menu only offers the switch account option.

What more information do you need?

There IS a logout button in Unity. Can you check if running unity --reset helps, or try logging into a guest account and see if there's any difference?

Ugh, i just realized my problem. This is embarrassing.

It was signing into the guest account that made me realize it, because the logout button showed up there (unity --reset made no difference).

My logout button was simply disabled in settings. Unfortunately I cannot tell exactly where the setting was because I used the UbuntuTweak program, which obviously adds a layer of abstraction from where the settings really are configured. To be honest, I have no idea why it was disabled in the first place though, I doubt I would have disabled it myself (although never say never). It also probably does not explain the original bug reporter's problem either (or at least it's not likely that everyone who commented on this bug also was using UbuntuTweak and had this setting coincidentally messed up like me). Does the system disable it by default during installation if there is only one account configured?

Anyway, my issues are solved. Thanks a lot and sorry if this whole bug turns out to be a bit of a waste of time (I write code too, I've had my time wasted too. In my defense I am not the original reporter, although I totally did give it a bit of a poke ;).

Thanks again,
B.
