thank you for your bug report, does it happen all the time? what did you update from what version to what version? does it happen in a guest session?

it seems like the theme selected is broken or gnome-settings-daemon is having issues

Could you add your .xsession-errors to the bug? Is that a local login or a remote one?

There is .xsession-errors.txt attached to the bug but I can upload a new .xsession-errors when I will be at home.

The bug doesn't happen all the time. It's a local login and not a guest session.
In the same session, the icons can disappear and then re-appear after a few minutes.

I installed ubuntu 11.10 (I re-formatted the system partion). The home partition wasn't re-formatted.
The old version is the same version: ubuntu 11.10 and before it, it was ubuntu 11.04. After installation, I updapted to all disponible updates and I install some programs. I don't know the faulty update. I'm not sure if the cause is an update.

did you get an error during that sessions? the ubuntu-bug file greps for warnings and showed a gnome-settings-daemon xerror one but the new one you added which should have details on that doesn't. There are some bugs known about similar issues when resuming laptops or connecting devices, do you do any of those?

I think I had not the bug during the last session. I do not know how the file xsession-errors: Is there only logd the session in this file?
It is possible that the bug occurs when connecting to a webcam or an external hard drive or when I unmount a "Samba mounting" because I often do that. I don't use the "resume system".
I have another problem (which is perhaps related) if I let my webcam connected at boot time: the sound is blocked.

you don't need to file the session log, just wait for the issue to happen and add the log there
