on my dell XPS L502, can't get any output from HDMI (presumbly because it is attached to the nvidia card which isn't active).

hybrid graphics switching is not supported in ubuntu yet. You need to work with these guys:

  https://launchpad.net/~hybrid-graphics-linux

Probably your hdmi output isn't wired to the intel card, but to the nvidia card. So other than blacklisting the i915 driver there isn't much that can be done.
