terminal contents don't refresh/update

1. open a terminal.
2. ssh to machine1.
3. ssh to machine2 from machine1.

see that the screen is now not refreshed properly.
i've even seen this bug when I open vi and only a local part of the screen is refreshed.

Some more notes:
- you don't need to ssh to get this behavior. it is the only way i know of to consistently reproduce the problem, however.

- if you change desktops and come back to the terminal, then the contents appear OK.

I don't know if it can help, but I have noticed that the problem shows up in gnome-terminal while it does not in terminator. On my machine, the problem in gnome-terminal was present both with the nuveau driver and NVIDIA proprietary driver version 173. Driver version-current seemed to fix the problem. So from my limited observation it seems like the problem is related to the interaction between gnome-terminal and the nvidia driver.
