If the file is not correctly created by the plugin, then this is not a bug in Hugin.

Changed in hugin:

Hugin itself reports constantly: "Der Assistent hat nicht erfolgreich abgeschlossen. Bitte überprüfen Sie die erzeugte Projektdatei." or translated: "The assistant could not complete successfully. Please take a look at the project.".

I've tried the newest version of Hugin available for Ubuntu 11.10: Hugin 2011.4.0.cf9be9344356. But without success. Same error.
The same version on Ubuntu 12.04: Hugin 2011.4.0.cf9be9344356 works. An older one, on a system never upgraded since install from CD, does too.

I found something strage:
it is working on a 32-bit system, while it doesn't work on a 64-bit system.
The systems seem to be identical by means of installed software versions. The only difference are the architectures: i686 and amd64.
On i686 digikam and huigin are working as expected, while
on amd64 they do not.

It is fixed for the latest versions of digicam (2.8.0) and hugin (2011.5.0+hg5985-0ubuntu1~precise).
