Bug Description

After some time using the system, the ubuntu icon turns white. Then, the bar stops hiding. This is really boring because the bar will hide the left side of the maximized windows.

Hey,
this happens when the Launcher is given keyboard focus, say when you press Alt+F1. However clicking away should cause the focus to go away, and normal operation to resume.

If you hit Alt+F1 and click on another app, does the Launcher hide? You are not using "focus follows mouse" are you? Have you any rough idea what you were doing when this happened first?

Yes, after Alt+F1 it gets back to normal. Thanks, now I don't have to logout.

I have no idea of what was I doing when this happened first. Definitely nothing with settings of unity or the system, as I only use this machine for chat and email. Last week I tried to enable zoom and the compiz zoom plugin; everything broke and I reseted unity. This doesn't sound related as the problem appeared some days after the reset, but it's worth mentioning.

I don't have "focus follows mouse".

Hmmm, are you running Compiz with Unity2D? How did you manage that?

That is an untested configuration for us. Not that we don't want it to work, we just need more resources!

I know you loose some of the eye-candy, but if you could use the standard Metacity window manager with Unity2D for a day or two to see if this bug re-appears, I'd be grateful.

Um, I thought that the unity --reset got me back to all defaults and metacity and stuff.
I did metacity --replace. Now I'll mark this bug as incomplete to see if it happens again.

Thanks Gerry and Omer.

Hey Leo,
yes I can see what you were thinking. Unity is actually a plugin for Compiz, whereas Unity2D is a set of applications running with the Metacity window manager. Is it quite possible to use Compiz with Unity2D (disabling the Unity plugin to Compiz via ccsm), but again we don't test (nor support) that case, so bugs like this one may occur.

Thanks for your input. If this bug reoccurs just with Metacity, please let us know.

This still happens while using Metacity. It seems less often, but it occurs like once a day.
Can I help you attaching some logs or debugging something?

Hi Leo
you're still seeing this I assume. We're not ignoring you, we're just tacking features right now before we concentrate on stability. Finding out a way of determining the cause of this bug is important, and right now I don't have any obvious idea. I'll do my best however.
