Bug Description

pcretest is not available on 11.10; it was removed from libpcre3 in pcre3 (8.12-3ubuntu1) (http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/p/pcre3/pcre3_8.12-3ubuntu2/changelog). There appears to be no package which contains it.

It should be available.

Any recent status on this? Have Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS deployed to group of users working with pcre on daily basis and have had to rework some procedures temporarily due to lack of pcretest(1). Would like to see it return to system.

Happy 3rd Birthday PCRETest defect! It's been great watching you grow up over the years. I remember your first birthday like it was just yesterday. Ignored defects sure do grow up fast.

While pcretest was removed first from the Ubuntu version of the package, this change has been included upstream in Debian. It is a violation of Debian policy for such tools to be included in the runtime library package the way it was, and the Debian maintainer opted to drop the tool rather than package it separately.

We are not going to reintroduce divergence with Debian to add this tool. If you think this tool is important to make available, please discuss it with the Debian maintainer.
