Decoding a video stream uses a considerable amount of CPU. Obviously, the exact amount depends on your system and the video stream. I'm afraid, with this little information it is not possible to come to any conclusion.

Yes, Totem uses gstreamer for decoding, therefore I'm suspecting it is gstreamer that eats up the CPU. There are two options to check whether this is the case:
1. Schedule a recording and view it with Totem
2. Get the rtsp URL of a channel, either from ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel or from your channels.conf. It should look like rtsp://127.0.0.1:8554/<group id>/<channel id>

If you can reproduce this problem, you'd need to do some profiling to find the code that causes this issue. It might be better to talk to gstreamer devs, though.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you should run "gst-launch playbin2 uri=<url>" after you retrieved the URL of a channel.

Can reproduce 100% of the time. totem playing mp3s. Default shows visualization. Takes a few minutes and then CPU reaches 100% and the GUI becomes largely unresponsive.

Let me know what you want me to collect.

John, it is unlikely that the issue you described is caused by the gnome-dvb-daemon plugin. You should instead file a bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org
