Bug Description

Hello,

I had a perfect installation of Ubuntu 11.10 but after I installed the application "compiz" now Ubuntu has lost the unity launch bar down the left side of the screen, no dash, no log-in/out menu at the top right corner of the screen. No! access to system settings such as the software centre, etc. (note: I made no major changes with compiz after it installed but this program seems to have rogered the setup some way and I have no idea how or why this should have happened).

**Additional information: On startup I have x2 login options a) Ubuntu which should include unity, dash etc i.e. standard user login and b) Ubuntu unity 2D. The unity 2D is working OK but a) is missing unity?

**Machine is a DELL Studio PC 64bit OS installed, CPU = intel core 2 duo, 8GB DDR2 RAM, HDD=750 with 8GB swap partition.

Question is it possible to repair this problem & if so how ??

**actionparsnip, Hello I successfully managed to install Opera without any difficulties this time, still dont know why I had such problem previously.

Any help much appreciated, Ivan

The software which has damaged my Ubuntu 11.10 installation is the "Compiz Config Settings manager" which was installed via the software center in Ubuntu. I have since looked again at this software and found comments like mine from several other annoyed users.

Please Note for OTHER USERS =====> DONT, REPEAT DO NOT INSTALL COMPIZ CONFIG SETTINGS MANAGER!!! WARNING this software will screw up Ubuntu 11.10 badly.

FOOT NOTE:- I have also tried to run the commands Unity reset & Icons reset and neither make any difference compiz config settings manager wrecked the desktop setup.

CONCLUSION:- will have to wipe the whole rig and re-install the whole thing now its messed up. Such a pain in the A** and so annoying as the whole machine was so nicely set up prior to this software.

Several other users reported precisely the same sympotoms as myself. Compiz Config settings manager serious unrepairable or unrecoverable damage to the desktop settings. Loss of Launcher, unity task bar down left side, no log in or log off menu at upper right hand corner of screen.

Can you please open a Terminal (you can do it in Unity 2D session, if 3D doesn't work), execute "unity --replace", and check if your problem was solved?

Hello, Dmitry Shachnev (mitya57),

(Possible fix or work around to the compiz config settings manager problem)

Please could you answer this question for me if possible?

I was wondering if Ubuntu 11.10 creates user profiles similar MS windows 7 does and if it does. I was wondering if I was to login to my account & create some extra (additional) user accounts on the system. Now I am assuming that each user account is linked to a user profile in Linux and that the new user logins wouldn't be damaged in the same way as my main user account has been.

**I know this sounds a bit simplistic but this might actually work, might fix the settings problem which I cannot undo from within this user account. So was wondering if additional user account might not be affected by the corrupted or damaged settings? Certainly seems like its worth a try.

**Basically I am trying to avoid having to re-install the whole system from scratch to fix this problem.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Am hoping to try a fix next Saturday. Regards Ivan

PS: Haven't tried the "unity --replace" yet but certainly will give this a try and report back.

the issue you got could be bug #874799, you can try "unity --reset" to reset your config

Could you try to login to a guest session from the login screen and from there try to create a new user account(if possible, I think it will ask for the password for the administrator of the computer)

**NOTE: I already tried, try "unity --reset" to reset your config.

Terminal replies with error this should not have happened please report this error/bug.

Confirm 100% Reset fails to fix the problem!!

Additional comments:-

NOTE: What I am trying to discover/establish here is if these corrupted settings that compiz config settings manager caused. a) Was this ONLY done to a single account/ user profile only? in which case just deleting a single user account & adding new accounts will fix this or b) has this affected the entire system to the point that I will have no option but to wipe & rebuild the rig from scratch? i.e. all user profiles/accounts are afffected here.

I have the same issue after trying to disable grid via compiz settings manager. It isn't system-wide corruption as login using another user a/c is ok. Login using the problematic user a/c is also ok with Ubuntu 2D. Appears that it can be solved by removing the following 2 lines from the file ~/.config/compiz-1/compizconfig/config:

I would presume that the 2 lines were added by the compiz settings manager while checking the Preference option.

Actually, hung desktop also happens if tweaking via gconf-editor for the compiz settings. However, removing unwanted directories from ~/.gconf/apps/compiz-1/plugins solves my problems.
