Bug Description

I was trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 (it actually says 12.04 LTS / dont understand why) I got to about 15% of the system install when it was trying to reach the mirrorserver, (I am connected to internet with Ethernet cable) and it crashed. Tried it again with the same result. Uploaded a bug report from ubuntu.

The ISO that you actually downloaded is not that of Ubuntu 11.10, but the first alpha version of Ubuntu 12.04. You probably followed the link at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads: it was not correctly titled. I have corrected the mistake and am currently asking the team that builds Ubuntu releases to create a PowerPC release for Ubuntu 11.10, since it is completely missing from the server.

As for the bug you've experienced, I have noticed that the installer fails to connect to the mirror site because it does not build the mirror URL correctly (at least it seems so). I have tagged your bug report so that it will be noticed by Precise bug testers.

Thanks for your input!

[Note to testers: the relevant log lines are in UbiquitySyslog.txt, they are:
Nov 5 12:40:45 ubuntu choose-mirror[10217]: DEBUG: command: wget -q http://mirror/ubuntu-ports//dists/precise/Release -O - | grep -E '^(Suite|Codename):'
Nov 5 12:40:45 ubuntu choose-mirror[10217]: WARNING **: mirror does not support the specified release (precise)]

Hi Alessandro!

First thanks for the quick response.
Yes I followed that link for the ISO and now I understand that it actually WAS 12.04.
I found a solution for the Mirror failure though:

I added

91.189.92.175 ports.ubuntu.com mirror

to

/etc/hosts

and the installer could find the ubuntu mirror site.

BUT NOW THE INSTALLER HAVE FROZEN AT "Configuring target system" so it still wont work :-(

I now see that they have changed the info on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads, 2 days ago it did not say anything about it being a daily build. I am downloading 10.10 in the meantime.

Yes, that was me. I also tried yesterday to contact the Ubuntu release team via IRC, but did not succeed. I'll try again to reach them, perhaps by posting to their mailing list or opening another bug report.

I'll inform you as soon as the build is ready.

As for the freeze during installation, I personally experienced it one time (while testing in a virtual machine), but reinstalling again has fixed the problem. If you can, could you please download the latest daily image from <http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/> (note the date), run it in a virtual machine (like VirtualBox) and see if the freeze occurs again?

If the mirror bug and/or freezes are still present in the "daily" build of tomorrow, I will confirm the bug.

Thanks again, especially for your workaround!

I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it works great! A bit faster also for my old iBook.

I found the workaround on the Ubuntu forums, did not save the link though.

So I will not try to install it again woth the new 12.04 of today, Im happy with 10.10 at the moment.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Jens,
it seems that the PowerPCDownloads page for Ubuntu 11.10 got fixed once and for all. You can now download a minimal CD, install a very basic version of Ubuntu and download and install the other packages you want later.

As for the original bug, could you please download a "daily" build of Ubuntu 12.04 from <http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/>, try to install it in a virtual machine like VirtualBox and see if the problem occurs again? If yes, please state so and specify the date that appears next to the ISO file in the "Last modified" column of the download page. Thanks!
