Summary: Dash not fully visible

Description:
Dash sometimes appears below apps already running , as if it were layered below all else.

Steps to reproduce:
Press either win key.

Results:
Dash is visibly obfuscated under running apps.

Expected results:
Running apps should move to the background, while Dash takes precedence.

Comments:
I witnessed this problem with Natty and it had been solved, or so I though,t before upgrading to Oneiric.

Thanks for your bug report. I think this bug may have already been documented, however. Could you please take a look at Bug 839164 and see if it sounds similar to your problem? If it does I'll go ahead and mark this as a duplicate of that bug.

Thanks for your quick response.

I've never encountered it in full screen mode, but then again I hardly ever use it. Regardless, I assume that the behavior I mention would manifest itself in the same way in full screen mode.

I've just noticed there's a work-around mentioned in the duplicate bug report comments, "enabling the Window Rules plugin in the CompizConfig Settings Manager and adding the rule "title=Dash" for the Above match".

It just occurred to me that the only way to make sure it's the same bug is to implement the work-around and see if it solves the issue. If it does, it's probably the same bug. If it doesn't work, it's not.

Ok, I just implemented it. I'll have to test the work-around (for a few days at least) before getting back to you on whether my report is a duplicate.

The problem crept up again a few days ago (maybe once and within a small time span of 5 minutes, but it did reappear), despite the work-around. So, I guess it's not the same bug as Bug 839164.

I'm disabling the workaround.

Ah, that's unfortunate that the problem remains. I've been unable to reproduce this on both my laptop and a virtualbox installation, so it looks like this problem may be somewhat specific to your hardware and/or software configuration. Hopefully someone else comes along who is also experiencing this problem so we can mark this as confirmed. In the meantime, could you please run the following command in a terminal:
apport-collect 885973

That will add additional system information relevant to problems with Unity to this report. Developers and other bug triagers may be able to use that to determine what's causing the problem.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. Compiz, in particular, is in heavy development and this bug may have been fixed in the development version of Ubuntu (12.04) if not on the current 11.10 release. If you are able, it would be of great help if you could confirm if the bug still exists by testing a livecd (available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/).
