Bug Description

Binary package hint: desktop-effects

Congratulations on getting desktop-effects in feisty.
When I enable them, everything works fine (this is on "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller"), except that somehow rhythmbox doesn't show its window anymore. It plays songs fine, but I just don't get it to show its window (maximizing, to other workspace, etc. all don't work). It works the way it should the instant I disable the effects again.

It would be fine if you can open compiz and rhythmbox from the terminal, and post here the output.

After restarting, I couldn't replicate with rhythmbox, but this time firefox
couldn't un-maximize after having it minimized. It seems to have something
to do with the switch to compiz *while* running windows applications.
Maybe it's an idea to give a message that it's advisable to restart the X
server after switching desktop effects to solve these weird windows?

Increasing importance, as this affects more apps than rhythmbox (probably all).

But could you run compiz (or desktop-effects) from the terminal, and attach then the output?

Emilio

The output follows below.
It really seems to be a problem of windows that are open before compiz is
started. Unfortunately, when I'm loading my session, the
keyring-password-dialog pops up just before compiz is launched, and
therefore the window isn't updated anymore (i.e., I can't see the asterisks
appear as I type the password).
Also, the firefox window is moved to the top of the screen (over the
gnome-panel) when I start compiz.

I just enabled Desktop Effects on my Feisty system to try it out, since I am something of a fan of this type of thing. (After all, eye candy like this is great to show Microsoft users… ;-))

Anyway, I am having a whole host of problems, and most of them seem to be related to this very bug report. I am not sure if I should create a new bug report, or just comment here, so I will just comment here first and if necessary create a new bug later.

Essentially, under certain circumstances (sometimes seemingly random) the body of a window refuses to show up. I am unable to run GNOME Terminal, xterm, or uxterm, for example, because the contents of the windows do not show up when they're run with Desktop Effects enabled. Some pop-up windows (like when attempting to file a bug in Launchpad and you choose "Search" for the package) in Epiphany have the same problem. I have been able to replicate this behavior across reboots, and it was only after I updated today and enabled Desktop Effects.

This is the only problem I have found so far. It does not seem to be an application-specific thing, either. So far, as I mentioned, it affects:

* GNOME-Terminal
* xterm
* uxterm
* Some pop-ups in Epiphany

I am sorry that I do not have more information to provide at this time. I am working on it.

I should have mentioned: I also have the Intel graphics chipset, in a Toshiba A55-S1064:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Also, interestingly enough, when I resized the terminal window that I just opened, it seemed to have fixed the problem of not properly displaying.

If I run xterm, I can resize it to display, then when I run a command in the terminal, I have to resize the terminal again to get the output to display (it doesn't seem to update without being resized). Same with uxterm. This also seemed to work on the popup window under Epiphany.

I happened to find that by accident when I went to a terminal and (out of habit) resized it to run lspci.

Starting compiz with a minimized window gets the window stuck minimized. Sometimes it still shows and sometimes it's invisible but either way you can't interact with the window.

Same problem here, running on nvidia TI 4200 9631 binary driver. Originally I had no problems, but through endless tweaking I managed to activate this feature.
For me disabling Mipmap option in the Desktop plugin for compiz helped.

Open gconf-editor
select Apps --> Compiz ---> Plugins ---> Decoration ---> All Screens ---> Options
deselect MipMap.

Like I said seems to help me. Hope this helps others.
