Bug Description

Binary package hint: vlc

When I watch a film,video or listen to music i can´t see the whole length of this file because vlc doesn´t show it to me exactly.
I use Edgy Eft (ubuntu 6.10) with the "Neutronium theme" but I have the same problem with feisty (all update installed) with the standard theme.

I can confirm this problem also on Feisty.

Sorry, but I can't upload a screenshot due to connection problems. Anyway, the "timer" appears exactly as in the image above.

I'm using Gnome with clearlooks theme.

Problem still exits with an actual gutsy installation. In the vlc trac is mentioned that it is fixed but with the actual vlc in gutsy (0.8.6c)

Still present in Hardy (both xfce and KDE, likely also Gnome).

Yes, is still present in Gnome in Hardy as well.

In my opinion, this is a major bug as showing the length of the item it is playing is a key feature for a media player!

There is a patch provided upstream (although upstream will not themselves fix it).

Why won't upstream fix this issue?

It doesn't say on their bug report, perhaps because to do so would mess up the size on Windows (would make it too big) - see the attachments on the upstream bug report. Just thinking about it, perhaps this is a wxwidgets interface problem?

Another possible reason might be the change to a QT GUI, they are may not be going to make changes to the stable 0.8 branch.

Upstream will not fix this, since official GUI is based on Qt, and fixes this issue.

This bug was fixed in the package vlc - 0.9.2-1ubuntu1

---------------
vlc (0.9.2-1ubuntu1) intrepid; urgency=low

  * New Upstream Release, exception granted by
      - dktrkranz, norsetto, Hobbsee (via irc). LP: #270404

  Changes done in ubuntu:

  * add libxul-dev to build-depends
  * make sure that vlc is build against libxul in configure. This doesn't
    change anything in the package, but makes it more robust if building
    in an 'unclean' chroot or when modifying the package.
  * debian/control: make Vcs-* fields point to the motumedia branch
  * add libx264-dev and libass-dev to build-depends
    LP: #210354, #199870
  * actually enable libass support by passing --enable-libass to configure
  * enable libdca: add libdca-dev to build depends and --enable-libdca
  * install the x264 plugin.

  Changes already in the pkg-multimedia branch in debian:

  * don't install usr/share/vlc/mozilla in debian/mozilla-plugin-vlc.install
  * new upstream .desktop file now registers flash video mimetype LP: #261567
  * add Xb-Npp-Applications to mozilla-plugin-vlc
  * remove duplicate entries in debian/vlc-nox.install

vlc (0.9.2-1) experimental; urgency=low
