I'm seeing the same issue on Ubuntu 7.10 beta 2.

I have a WD MyBook (USB Drive) an a iPod Nano 4Gb, both of these devices intermittently create duplicate desktop icons.

If you need any more detail, or would like me try anything, give me a shout.

I have observed same behaviour with 7.10. Occurs randomly, i.e., sometimes you get proper icon display, sometimes multiple icons. Unable to correlate with anything.

This is my workaround to this problem. It refreshes the volume icons on the desktop every time you log in.

create a file somewhere in your home directory, and put this inside:

gconftool --type bool -s /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible false
gconftool --type bool -s /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible true

Save it, and make it executable

Open System > Preferences > Sessions

Under Startup Programs, add the script you just created.

Until official patch is made, this is a workaround.

Hi!
Thanks for the script, but unfortunately it doesn't work for me if I just execute the two commands from the terminal. I have 2 USB drives, both have 2 icons on the desktop, and after running your script the 4 icons disappear and then reappear all of them.

I forgot to mention I have 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon with the latest updates.

Also having this problem in 7.10 (latest updates), and above gconftool workaround does not prevent duplicate icons from reappearing. Seems to happen randomly with different drives all the time.

Should have added that the drives in question are on an external WD USB drive.

I have the same problem myself. But I noticed it's on a drive that I specifically:

1) Renamed
2) Have plugged into the system at pretty much all times
3) Gave a special emblem (maybe a special icon too, I forget at this point)

I don't know if ANY of this matches anybody else's particular setup for those that experience the same bug.
