Hi,
this is not really an Ubuntu bug, rather a question. (Filing a bug is reporting an error in an application already present in Ubuntu, suggesting a new feature or asking for an application to be included in future Ubuntu versions; asking a question is asking the Ubuntu community for help or clarifications. Since you're asking about the use of Netflix on Ubuntu, that is more like a question).

In the future, please use Ubuntu Answers (<https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu>) for this.

Hello,

There is NO simple solution to watching streaming movies via Netflix (Watch Instantly) in Ubuntu. Netflix does NOT have an Ubuntu compatible player.

This is because they use Microsoft Silverlight plugin with DRM. Although there is an Ubuntu alternative to Silverlight called Mono/Moonlight, it does not have any DRM built in and it is very unlikely Microsoft will ever make a DRM option for it. Netflix has stated they will not use anything without DRM. So if Netflix continues to use Silverlight, then there will be no Ubuntu support.

It has been rumored that Netflix are working on an Ubuntu compatible player, but this is not currently available to the public.

There are instructions on how to use Netflix in a virtual machine here: http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_watch_Netflix_%28Watch_Instantly%29_in_Linux

Also, the version of Ubuntu (9.04) you are using is outdated and no longer supported as of October 23, 2010, please consider updating to a supported release by following the instructions (in descending order) at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/KarmicUpgrades
Then:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades

Additionally, if you want to be using the latest release, then:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaverickUpgrades
Then:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NattyUpgrades
Then:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OneiricUpgrades

Alternatively, you can just do a fresh install of the latest version (which is preferable for a user of a release as old as yours) by following the instructions at:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

Also, due to the fact that there is nothing the Ubuntu developers can do about the lack of Netflix support due to the proprietary nature of the product, I will be closing this bug as invalid.

Many thanks,
Timothy
