Oh I have this all the time! Don't know why I never reported it. I am running Edgy on a IBM thinkpad R51.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet have enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

Also, could you please check to see if shutting down in Ubuntu causes this same bug to appear?

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelProblems . Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

it happened very often to me until I disabled splash boot screen to see what shutdown logs where saying.

To try this fix edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst and there you will find rows like this:
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro quiet splash locale=it_IT
Change this line to looks like:
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda5 ro locale=it_IT

You have to remove 'quiet' and 'splash' words.

Let me know if it works for you!

Bye
Piero

I think that the problem is in the *buntu's kernel package, not in the Windows Manager.

You might be actually right about the kernel package, as this problem disappeared since I recompiled the kernel using stock kernel.org source (with suspend2 and ck patches).
It might be as well usplash or initrd, as I disabled these as well.

Hmm, after I switched to GNOME (ubuntu-desktop) on the same machine, the problem suddenly vanished. It seems to be specific to Kubuntu.

Is this problem occuring when kubuntu is used with gdm?

Sorry if this is a dump question: how to enter KDE instead of GNOME via GDM? I can't find a button or menu on the screen. Thanks in advance.
