This bug is caused by upgrading your kernel to a version that the old Nvidia driver in Ubuntu 10.04 does not support. To avoid this bug you can either switch back to the kernel (2.6.32) that Ubuntu 10.04 shipped with, or upgrade to a newer Ubuntu version.
