Bug Description

Quite often I'm unable to access the Accounts preferences. If I click on "Edit - Accounts" no window will show up, nor do I get an error.

The file ~/.xsession-errors will contain the following errors for each attempt:

GLib-GObject-WARNING **: instance with invalid (NULL) class pointer
GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_data: assertion `G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failed
GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid unclassed pointer in cast to `GtkWindow'
Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_window_present_with_time: assertion `GTK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed

I can't reproduce it 100%, but it usually starts to occur when a connection error occurred for one of the accounts and this has been reported in the contact list accordingly.

After some more trying I managed to find a way to reproduce the issue. It's quite easy actually.

- Open Empathy
- Click on "Edit - Accounts"
- Close the Accounts dialog

After this it is not possible to open the Accounts dialog again.

A work-around is killing the "empathy-accounts" process using the "System Monitor". After killed you can access the dialog again, but just one time again.

You seriously want me to make a screencast of the process? :-S
Ow well...

Attached you'll find a video of the steps to reproduce.
I started recording right after logging in after a clean reboot.
Some accounts in Empathy are disabled, as you can see in the accounts dialog, to speed up the recoding process.
The link on my desktop is a link to the file ~/.xsession-errors.

Let me know if you need any more info.

comment from upstream:
"when you experience this issue could you please:
- Install empathy-dbg
- Open a terminal
- export G_DEBUG=fatal-warnings
- gdb /usr/bin/empathy-accounts
- Once it crash type 'thread apply all bt' to get a trace and attach it to this
bug."

could you do that and reply in this bug report? Thanks.

The latest stable release of Empathy (3.2.2) has been available for almost a month now. Different issues, security related as well, have been fixed, including this one.

What does it take for Ubuntu to update it's repositories to this release?

I've set up a PPA with Empathy 3.2.2 for those affected by the issue and looking for a fix: https://launchpad.net/~forage/+archive/empathy

I can confirm that the issue is resolved in this release.
