Bug Description

Ubuntu 11.10
Unity and/or Compiz bug
I upgraded recently from 11.04

After login, pop up windows such as the password prompt for privilege escalation do not receive focus, causing the user to have to click the window to begin entering their password.

Steps to reproduce:
Reproducible always.
If there is anything that may for example require key ring access and it starts on login
like Wireless Network, password prompt window will start without acquiring focus.

Thank you,
Faruk

Thanks for your bug report. Bug 876333 sounds similar to your problem, but I'm not positive. Could you please take a look at that report and see if it describes the same issue that you are having? If it does, please go ahead and mark this report as a duplicate of that bug, or I can do it if you verify that it is the same issue.

Bug 876333 is definitely related for part of my report about Alt+Tab switching occasional
dose not give focus to window I'm switching to. That is duplicate.

But I think switching spaces with keyboard, and pop ups not receiving focus
after login are not related. I can not confirm that.

This report may need to be summarised.

- When using keyboard bindings to switch between spaces , top window
dose not get keyboard focus. It looks like either top panel or unity launcher
gets focus.

- After login, pop up windows like key ring password dose not receive focus.

If you want me to comment on Bug 876333 and append this there too.
So we can mark this as duplicate.
Let me know.

Thanks,
Faruk

Thanks for checking out that report. To me it seems like there are two separate issues here. Focusing windows when a workspace is switched, and your keyring prompt not receiving focus problem. These issues might be related but I'm not positive. I don't think we should mark this as duplicate, then, but change this report to only encompass the keyring prompt not being focused issue, removing everything about switching workspaces and those windows not being focused. You should certainly mark yourself as an affected user on bug 876333, though.

In summary, I propose we change the title of this bug to:
"After login, prompts such as the privilege escalation prompt do not receive focus"

And the body of the report to:
"After login, pop up windows such as the password prompt for privilege escalation do not receive focus, causing the user to have to click the window to begin entering their password."
"Exact steps to reproduce:" (please provide these)

If you agree, please go ahead and make these changes.

affects: ubuntu → compiz (Ubuntu)
summary: - Window focus issue on using expo, Alt+Tab and popup window after login
+ After login, prompts such as the privilege escalation prompt do not
+ receive focus

I agree about that and I modified this bug report.

What about Workspace switching issue, do you think its related to bug 876333?
Or it requires new bug report?

Thanks,
Faruk

Thanks for making the changes. For the workspace switching focus issue we should have a separate bug report, yes, as it's possible that it isn't related to this problem. All of these problems deal with window focus, so they may be related, but I'm not that familiar with compiz/unity so I can't be positive. Also, on the subject of this bug, I was unable to reproduce it on my laptop. I set my wireless password to something incorrect so that it would ask me for the password after attempting to connect at login, but that prompt had focus when it appeared. It did take a few seconds after login for the prompt to appear, however. I also realize I've been assuming that you're running in the full Unity environment, and not in an ubuntu-2d session, is that correct? Ubuntu-2d uses metacity as its window manager, which would be responsible for focus issues in that case.

Yes I'm using full unity not 2D.
I don't know if its related, laptop I have issue with is Dell XPS L502X
with integrated intel graphics card (Sandy Bridge) and
additional Nvidia card (Optimus).
Most of the time I don't use nvidia and its turned off with ACPI call.
I know there is some issues with i915 drivers,
but I don't know if it also affects compiz this way.

But if you can not reproduce issue, either I mess something
or its i915 and compiz issue.
Maybe someone else with similar hardware configuration can confirm.

Thanks,
Faruk

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates.

It would be most helpful if you could see if the most recent versions of Ubuntu have fixed the issue (for me, that has been fixed) - if you could test 12.04 and later it would be wonderful. 11.10 is going to reach end-of-life (EOL) soon, so there's a good incentive to upgrade.

Thank you for the help!
