Bug Description

Downloaded firefox-8.0b2.tar.bz2 for Linux AMD64 from Mozilla and installed into /usr/local/bin. Loading a page that uses Flash generates the following error:
/local/x86_64/bin/firefox-8.0b4/plugin-container: /usr/lib/libnss3.so: version `NSS_3.12.10' not found (required by /local/x86_64/bin/firefox-8.0b4/libxul.so)

Firefox 7.0 installed by the same method does not exhibit this problem in Ubuntu 10.04.

Tried building Firefox-8.0b2 from source, but it did not resolve the problem with libxul.so.

Error occurs using both the wrapped 32-bit plug-in and the beta 64-bit plug-in. Work-around is to set dom.ipc.plugins.enabled = false. I was also able to create a new preference specifically for the 64-bit Flash plug-in, set it false, and then restore dom.ipc.plugins.enabled = true. Problem still exists in firefox-8.0b4.tar.bz2.

Same problem in Ubuntu 11.04, but works OK in Ubuntu 11.10.

Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. You can run the Firefox betas from ppa:mozillateam/firefox-next. The current system NSS version across all releases is 3.12.9, so this is not a bug. Also, I don't think that the upstream Firefox likes using system NSS in any event. You can get support for Firefox at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/home or support for Ubuntu specific issues (that are not bugs) at http://askubuntu.com. Please report any other issues you may find.

I am aware of the ppa for Firefox 8 and I may consider switching to it for my Ubuntu 11.10 installation, as I am still working on migrating all the capabilities I have installed in my 10.04 installation (which has been upgraded several times over the last two or three years) to what was initially a clean install of 11.04 and now upgraded to 11.10. But, in my stable 10.04 installation, I am not ready to give up my Firefox 3.6.x install yet, as there are several plug-ins I like using that are not available yet for Firefox 8; I will switch between the two versions depending on my needs. That is why I was installing Firefox 8 in /usr/local/bin. I've been doing this for years, so it is very frustrating to suddenly encounter this problem, especially since the upstream Firefox 7 does not exhibit this problem.
