I cannot upgrade to 11.10, and not sure what my choices are now.

I have only used ubuntu packages, and don't think I've customized much (nfs & autofs aside)

Thanks for your report. It confirms that it is a duplicate of bug 874220 and I'm marking it as such. You can workaround this issue by removing libsublime1 and upgrading again.
