Bug Description

I am a long-time user of gEdit and I still don't understand: why can't I change text encoding from editor's menu as I can do in any browser for example. If "it's not a bug, it's a feature request" please explain WHY?!

Hello Roman,
Thank you for reporting this bug, your attention to detail is appreciated. I'm sorry for your suffering with this bug. Would you please explain more, what you mean with "change text encoding from editor's menu"? AFAIk, gEdit does it from a menu on the bottom bar(Kindly see attached screenshot), so, you request to make it possible through the "File" menu (for example) so you can reach it with a shortcut key, or what?

Hello Ahmed. Thank you for your early response!
Sorry, I don't see any screenshot attached. May be you forgot to attach it?
In gEdit 3.2.0 statusbar shows only syntax highlight mode, insert/replace mode, line/column count, tab width (at screenshot). There is no way to change encoding in it =( I understand that this is a feature request, not a bug report. But ability to view any text file is a key feature of any text editor in my opinion. And this feature isn't too hard to implement (that's why I'm writing to papercuts).

So by phrase "change text encoding from editor's menu" I mean any way to view text in another encoding from editor itself without strange actions as going to gconf-editor and replacing some string values in it.

Hello Roman,
Yeah I forgot to upload the attachment :D, Sorry.
I don't think there's something evil in requesting a feature, that's how code evolution happens after all :)
This bug is now upstream, but sorry I need to invalidate it in "PaperCuts" project as it doesn't include feature requests however it's confirmed in gEdit itself, but please feel free to file reports as a papercut when you see it's necessary and I'll direct it to the right way, Regards.

This has not been offered before version 3.2 which is packaged in Oneiric
You can change the character encoding by reopening the file and choosing an
encoding in the "Open file" dialog.

OK. I haven't noticed this option in Open Dialog, because always open files from file manager. Thank you!
