Can you try the package

cups - 1.5.0-8ubuntu7~ppa1

from my PPA

https://launchpad.net/~till-kamppeter/+archive/ppa

Its USB backend is based on the new libusb 1.0.x. Perhaps this helps on your problem.

The backend can sttill have bugs, so tell us exactly what the behavior is after having installed the new CUPS package.

ok i installed your ppa he still do not find my printer at all.

my problem is i'm out of network cables i have to buy cables to test the printer on the network interface.

the point is with 11.10 ALL of our printers stop working a samsung laser a dot matrix printer and the big magicolor 7300

i have to remove 11.10 from 2 pcs and rollback to 11.04 because of this.

i write another bug report for the dot-matix-printer here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/878794

i also ordered some network cables to plug the magicolor 7300 into the network to test the printer over the lan.

According to the error_log all is going correctly with CUPS, the filters and the USB communication. The only thing going wrong is that only blank paper comes out.

Can you attach the PPD file of the printer, from /etc/cups/ppd/?

Can you look into the front panel menus of the printer whether there is a possibility to let the printer print error pages? If you do not find such a setting you can also look into the web configuration interface of the printer. To access this interface, connect the printer to your network, and enter the IP of the printer in the URL line of your web browser.

Print another job and scan the error message on the error page if you get one now.

Do you get the test page printed if you print it unfiltered? Run the command

cat /usr/share/system-config-printer/testpage-a4.ps | sudo DEVICE_URI=usb://KONICA%20MINOLTA/magicolor%207300 /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb 1 1 1 1 ''

Does the test page come out now?

Have you also checked whether your paper size is set correctly (A4 or Letter)? The default setting should match with the paper actually in the printer, also the page size setting in the dialogs of the applications should be correct.

till@till:~/ghostscript/testfiles$
----------

One can see that some of the default settings are conflicting and that one option has no default setting. This can lead to the printer refusing to print. This is a bug in the manufacturer-supplied PPD file, so not a Ubuntu bug.

Please start system-config-printer (Click gear at the upper right, then "Printers" in the menu), right-click your printer's icon, and click "Properties" in the menu. Then, in the sections "Installable Options" and "Printer options", adjust the settings, once, that they correspond with how your printer is actually equipped, and second, so that the conflict markers disappear. Then you should be able to print again.

So the problem is not the CUPS filters or the PPD file. The output data stream is perfectly OK for the printer. The problem is that CUPS cannot communicate with the printer via USB, and this is a kernel problem (fixes and improvements on the CUPS backend for USB all did not work): bug 917148.
