Unity 11.10 Cannot create launcher for Matlab

Bug Description
When creating a non-terminal launcher for Matlab, the flag -Desktop must be appended. Given there is no mechanism to create custom launchers in Unity in 11.10, there is no way to create a launcher for Matlab. Additionally, there are many possible applications where a launcher with more than just the binary path would be useful/required, and for all of these apps, Unity prevents such usage.
