vm-fetched-message-count goes negative

I observed today that the variable vm-fetched-message-count was -5. But there were several message in the folder that had fetched bodies. So, the counting is not working right.

This is leading to too many messages being loaded in the VM buffer, causing large garbage collection pauses.
