Bug Description

My macbook 2,1 goes to energy saving mode and dims the screen. But when I touch any key, the screen remains black
As workaround, I type my password to unblock with black screen, I don't see what I'm typing, and then I press the brightness up key and then I recover the normal mode.

Hi, I'm running 11.10 on the same Macbook model and also have this problem. When I resume from suspend, the screen is completely dimmed. I often can't see the login screen. The laptop screen also dims when I press Fn-F7 to change the multi-monitor mode. In both of these situations, I can bring the brightness back up with Fn-F2. But every time I resume or change monitor modes, it has to be done again. I found the problem resolved for the multi-monitor switch when I chose "Turn off after: Never" in the Screen options. However, the problem returned after another suspend and resume cycle.

Thanks for the info on the system. Has anybody affected to this bug checked if this can be reproduced with the last version available of Gnome shipped with Ubuntu (Gnome 3.2)?

Sorry, Walter. I don't understand your question. I'm using latest ubuntu: 11.10, with gnome. Is that what you ask?

Yes, thanks. The issue may be with gnome-screensaver, and not with gnome-power-manager. Can you try to uninstall gnome-screensaver (from a terminal)

sudo apt-get remove gnome-screensaver

and install

sudo apt-get xscreensaver

and see if the issue persists?

Thanks Walter,

I removed gnome-screensaver and installed xscreensaver and the screen still dims w/o being able to wake it up.

In particular, I tested by:

1. apt-get update/upgrade, replacing gnone-screensave w/ xscreensaver
2. Logout (to LDM)
3. Wait some amount of time
4. Screen dims
5. No keys (including brightness keys) will wake up the display
6. Blindly type in my password
7. Once logged in, brightness keys work

This issue seems to be resolved for me, I haven't seen it in a while whereas it was previously very intrusive. I'm running Unity 2D and previously experienced it under that environment. I haven't changed anything specific to this issue besides accepting regularly scheduled updates. I had continued to experience this in December. I'll comment if I see it again.

I can confirm that this issue seems to be resolved for me as well. Sometime between my last point 1/17 and David's post an update fixed my MacBook. I see I've installed updated lots of packages including X, xserver, and the kernel, so not sure exactly what update fixed this bug, but "WFM".

Can others on this notification list please re-test (to confirm the problem) and then apt-get update/upgrade to see if the problem goes away?
