Bug Description

On a fresh installation of Ubuntu 11.10 I got problems with the brightness. As soon I try to change it with the keyboard keys I am not able to increase it to a usable value.

The problem is related to the max_brightness set as 1025, while the normal value when the system starts is 119443. These two values comes from the files:
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:17.0/0000:04:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/nv_backlight/brightness
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:17.0/0000:04:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/nv_backlight/actual_brightness
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:17.0/0000:04:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/nv_backlight/max_brightness

Paolo, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-nouveau REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
