Thank you for taking the time to report this bug to improve Ubuntu. Have you installed any updates lately? There was bug #854292 about the session indicator disappearing after installing some updates. However, that should've been fixed in final, but if you're still experiencing it, it might not have been properly fixed.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → indicator-session (Ubuntu)

Thank you for your bug report, what icon theme do you use (gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme)? Could you add your .xsession-errors to the bug?

Changed in indicator-session (Ubuntu):

Finally, i re-installed all from scratch without specifying my old home partition.
Then the upper-right icon (gear) appeared.

When I edit the fstab to use my home partition, the gear disappeared.
So I returned to the preceding working situation, without home partition.
I saved my home partition to a new place.
I formated my home partition.
I moved the standard /home to that partition.
And restart : the gear was in the upper-right corner.

Then I reinstalled all my data and programs.
And I am finishing setting-up all my utilities (firefox, thunderbird, accounts, etc.

It is very time-consuming but all work fine.

So here is my recommendation :
when there is a new version of ubuntu,
 NEVER UPGRADE !
ALWAYS REINSTALL FROM SCRATCH !
