Bug Description

I'm using Vinagre in Ubuntu 11.10 AMD64, and have found that it does not remember passwords (when told to via the "Remember this credential" checkbox), except when a connection has been established, disconnected, then the Remote -> Recent Connections menu is used (without closing Vinagre; after being closed it will not remember the password).

Give this a go: (#4 is the only combination that works for remembering passwords)

1. Connect to site -> enter password -> check "Remember this credential" -> connect. Bookmark site. Close and restart vinagre. Bookmarks -> bookmarked site. Password not remembered.

2. Start vinagre. Bookmarks menu -> last site. Password not remembered.

3. Start vinagre. Remote menu -> Recent Connections -> last site. Password not remembered.

4. Connect to site -> enter password -> check "Remember this credential" -> connect. Click disconnect. Remote menu -> Recent Connections -> last site. *Password REMEMBERED*. (this is the only case where I've got Vinagre to remember the password)

This wasn't a problem in Ubuntu 11.04.

I should have mentioned that this is on a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. Tried on two different machines (both fresh installs), same problem.

Same problem for me, on at least two different machines, both running 11.10 Ocelot

Ditto. Same problem: "Nightmeric" 11.10 on amd64 (upgraded from 11.04)

I got bit by this. I fixed it by removing $HOME/.vnc/passwd

after that, vinagre remembers passwords correctly again. Not sure why this works, since vinagre doesn't recreate the file, but it fixed the problem for me. Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Update. It only seems to remember it as long as I dont close vinagre. If I disconnect and reconnect, it remembers the password, but if I close vinagre, it still forgets the password. *sigh*

Sigh indeed Michael :) .. what you described is case #4 in my initial report.. Vinagre remembers passwords while it is still open, as soon as it's closed, all passwords are forgotten. (mind you, I haven't tried this with multiple hosts to see if only the last used password is remembered..?)

Lem: For the entire day I have connected and disconnected between two remote hosts, each time typing the same passwords and each time time clicking "Remember Password". The problem described persists, IT NEVER REMEMBERS MY PASSWORD!

Another admin set the (very strong) passwords, so at least I have them well committed to memory now lol.

This problem seems more pervasive than we thought. I can't get Nautilus to remember the login credentials of any of my bookmarked SSH connections, even if I click "Remember Forever" each time".

I had 2 bookmarks of the same server for 6 months now.

The first and older remebered the password correctly. The newer never did. After setting up a new user account and setting up bookmarks again here, no passwords are saved anymore. 100% loss :(

I use vncviewer (which has a vastly inferior user interface) because of this bug. It's a shame.

I moved to REMMINA. Give a try:

http://remmina.sourceforge.net/

Better than Vinagre.

Hmm just tried REMMINA NonSec, looks good but couldn't get it to connect with OS X (Unknown authentication scheme from VNC server: 30, 35).

Using 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with all updates and still same problem - passwords are not saved. But I moved to Remmina too - great tool.

Please notice Remmina *looks* good, but it isn't. I used Remmina for a while, then I returned back to Vinagre because Remmina crashes too often.
So, I would like to solve this bug of Vinagre.

Still exists in Utopic Unicorn (14.10). Nearly two years since the bug was supposedly fixed upstream. Has upstream just not put out a release with the fix in it, or has Ubuntu not taken the upstream release with the fix?
