It seems the system (ubuntu) mute and the hw (Lenovo) mute status'es can get out of sync. For example the sound applets shows no mute and the hw mute lamp does. And vice verca.
Work around:
Set the hardware and the applet to mute off (sound on) - reboot. The status is now in sync for the mute setting.
It seems to be the software, that fails to set the hw status. Selecting mute in the applet does not update hw.
Setting mute on hw correctly updates software.
