Mouse pad (touch pad) not working after upgrade

Bug Description

My mouse pad is not working after upgrading to the latest ubuntu 11.10. During the install, the installation complained that there are some problems and the machine might be in unusable state. After restart I saw that my mousepad (touchpad) is not working. Please advice

After a couple of restarts, the mouse pad started working. I don't know how it got fixed, but somehow it is got fixed. Please remove this from the bug list. Thanks for your patience.

Touchpad behaviour in Oneiric seems to be problematic. On both my notebooks (both sporting a synaptic touchpad) they work at login time but then - sometimes - they stop working at some point that looks random [I haven't been able to find a pattern].
