Bug Description

I just got the "Ubuntu 11.10 Upgrade Available" dialog, and clicking the "Ask Me Later" button does nothing. The button does it's little depression animation thing, but then the popup doesn't go away. I have clicked it many times. (This was /usr/lib/update-manager/check-new-release-gtk according to ps - killing that process made the dialog go away).

Darxus ,

Thank you for reporting this bug.

This is the normal behavior when the distro is no longer supported.
with this in mind this is what I mean.
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Karmic

If you read you will see the following.

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) is NOT an LTS (Long Term Support) release and is no longer supported with security updates (as of April 2011). It is recommended to upgrade to the current version of Ubuntu

And in the the file.
/usr/lib/update-manager/check-new-release-gtk

It goes into nag mode, but it should display a unsupported dialog.

The other buttons should work. eg: Buttons: Don't Upgrade and Upgrade Later click the little x on the top right to close..

Darvux,

Sorry I just got an e-mail it said I didn't really explain this out to you.
The e-mail was not from you, but from another.

I know from the the top you are using Natty Narwhal 11.04

But I take it you have upgraded it from Karmic Koala??

Which in the /etc/apt/source.list at the very top it will have a comment code header
like
Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" - Release amd64 (20091027)
which was the first install using the CD...
This is why that button does nothing.

Well if you like please remove it and put in.

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.04 _Natty Narwhal_ - Release amd64 (20110427.1)]/ natty main restricted
You don't have to do this it will still dismiss from the other buttons Don't and the X in the top corner.

or upgrade if you like.

Yes, /etc/apt/sources.list says at the top:
# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 9.10 _Karmic Koala_ - Release amd64 (20091027)]/ karmic main restricted

How is this not a bug? Requiring removal of a comment in this file to fix this dialog doing nothing at all when clicking "ask me later"? At the very least it seems the dialog should pop up a message saying "sorry, I can't do anything until you remove this line from your /etc/apt/sources.list". But it still seems ridiculous to have that requirement. Why is this comment line even a problem?

I'm plenty capable of doing the upgrade without this dialog, I just think the dialog is doing a very wrong thing (nothing), pretty far from the user friendliness I've come to expect form Ubuntu.

Darxus,

I changed to incomplete to ask for information.

Can you do me a small favor please?

In a terminal run a command

lsb_release -c -s

This should spit out a short codename.

Please paste here what it returns.

If it errors the error, or the single word that it gives you please?
