Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to this bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.

I was not sure witch log files in dist-upgrade you needed so I tar the directory and attached it. I use to do a lot of trouble shooting work on these kinds of problems, so I removed some packages that I thought may interfere, same results. I also tried the upgrade on two other machines and got the same results. I am using the update manager to start the upgrade. If there is not a clean log file in the included file. I can clean the log directory and try again.

If there is any else you or I can do to help let me know

I found this in the apt.log.

Upgrading nspluginwrapper:amd64 due to Breaks field in ia32-libs:amd64
Investigating (9) nspluginwrapper [ amd64 ] < 1.2.2-0ubuntu9 -> 1.4.4-0ubuntu3 > ( multiverse/utils )
Broken nspluginwrapper:amd64 Depends on nspluginviewer [ amd64 ] < none > ( none ) (= 1.4.4-0ubuntu3)
  Considering nspluginviewer:i386 -1 as a solution to nspluginwrapper:amd64 1
Holding Back nspluginwrapper:amd64 rather than change nspluginviewer:amd64
Done

I removed nspluginwrapper and upgraded. After the update I could not play flash files i.e. youtude. I installed the flashplugin and that works. I use nookstudy under wine. That no longer works on this system. I think I will hold off on upgrading my other 5 system till this release becomes a bit more stable.

Thanks Ernest, the location of some libraries have changed in 11.10 due to the change to the "multiarch" system, coming from Debian. This may have caused the broken dependency that you observed and that is solved as you did by unisntalling the broken package and reinstalling it back once the upgrade completes.

I will mark this particular report as invalid as you were able to complete the upgrade, but please feel free to remark it as "new" if you think it is worth it to keep it open.

As for the the problem with wine, if you want to get attention on this problem please open a specific bug report.

I have found so many problems with this update that I am giving up on it. I'm going to try a clean install, try the apps I need if I have the same problems I will go back to 11.04. One interesting problem. Clicking from any app that opened the file manager to display the contents of the folde i.e. download a pdf with chrome, click open folder containing the pdf brings up vlc instead of the file manage. After I do a clean install and reinstall my apps, I'lllet you know what happens.

Everything works on a clean install except Nook study for pc. That use to work.
I have the same upgrade problem on another system. There is something wrong with the upgrade not the operating system it's self. The problem is in the upgrade. Nook Study not working under wine in 11.10 is a separate problem. I think the upgrade problem has to do with the adobe flash and the nspluginwrapper.

Seems adobe flash should be in the third party repository and those repositories should be disabled in the upgrade.

I had another system with the same upgrade problem. The apt log showed it failed on the nspluginwrapper:i386. I uninstalled the nspluginwapper. The upgrade to 11.10 when without a problem. Everything seems to be working fine. The original system I reported this problem against seems to have a hardware problem which accounts for the other strange stuff.

I don't know whether the nspluginwapper upgrade problem I had is a bug or not. The work around is simply remove it, do the upgrade, provide you don't have a hardware problem,

there's obviously something wrong with the upgrade of nspluginwrapper or a related package but I still haven't found a way to reporduce it. reopening.

It looks like the root cause of the problem is libcupsys2:i386 being installed on amd64 (installed as a dependency of printer drivers like cnijfilter for example)

If you still have a system that fails to upgrade could you please try to remove libcupsys2 and tell if it helps ?
Thanks in advance.

Could you please try removing the (obsolete) libcupsys2 ?

I am sorry, I did a clean install on the system I Originally report the problem against the up grade went well. I upgraded three other systems, all three had the same problem, I removed nspluginwrapper and the upgrade completed without problem. Two of the three have libcupsys2 on them one does not. I have one more laptop to upgrade either today or tomorrow. If it has libcupsys2 on it I will first try the upgrade if it fails I will remove the libcupsys2 and try again,
I am using nookstudy on the two upgraded laptops, since it is still working on them and not on the clean upgrade, I am afraid to to anything to them until the class required the nookstudy text book finishes. But I will not this on the other laptop, either today or tomorrow. Does wine use libcupsys2?
