Bug Description

When I change LCD backlight value using Fn + left/right keys, the backlight change in 3 steps each time where it should increase/decrease at 1 step.

NOTE: This bug just happens when I used OpenSource ATI video drivers. If I use proprietary there is no bug.

Max value is:
root@cas-netbook:/home/cas# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
9

Adjusting to lowest using keyboard and then starting increasing, I get:

root@cas-netbook:/home/cas# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
0

root@cas-netbook:/home/cas# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
3

root@cas-netbook:/home/cas# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
6

root@cas-netbook:/home/cas# cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
9

If I continue to increase with keyboard, the brightness value don't
increase more then value 9.

And, If I echo value 1 to brightness, increasing with keyboard, I cat
the brightness and I get value 4, instead value 3 if brightness
started with value 0.

I simple don't get any event when I use the brightness key
combination: Fn + arrow left/right. Here is an example of what I got:

root@cas-netbook:/home/cas# input-events 4
/dev/input/event4

NOTE: Acer AO722 should be the same hardware as AO522 (AO722 have a resolution LCD of 1366x728 on a 11.6'' LCD while AO522 have a 1280x720 on a 10.1'' LCD).

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Can you also run acpi_listen in a terminal, then press your brightness up key exactly one time, then brightness down exactly one time, and provide the output? Thanks!

Let me say that I tested again to verify that this bug just happens when I am using the OpenSource ATI video drivers. When I am using proprietary drivers it just works as expected.

I don't use proprietary drivers because I can't hibernate using them.

Seth, here is the output of acpi_listen (while using ATI proprietary drivers, no bug):

root@cas-netbook:/home/cas# acpi_listen
video LCD 00000086 00000000
video LCD 00000087 00000000

Joseph, I can understand what upstream kernel version I should install to test.

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

My Ubuntu is Natty and I can see kernel builds for Oneiric, which are the latest ones.... Could you please point me to the correct version/link I should try?

Thanks.

Actually I think it would be preferable to try the most recent build available, which is currently

  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.1-rc9-oneiric/

The -series just specifies the configuration used for the build, and there's nothing wrong with using an oneiric kernel configuration with a natty userland.

I tested both v2.6.39-rc4-natty and v3.1-rc9-oneiric but the bug persists. I verified with uname -a that I was running that kernels.

Anyone have any idea of something more I can test? and why this may be happening (just when using OpenSource ATI video driver)?

I'm having similar problems with the brightness control on an Acer K60IJ laptop. In my case the brightness keys (Fn-F5 and Fn-F6) do nothing at all.

Paul: That's a different issue. Please file a separate bug by running
'ubuntu-bug linux' in a terminal. Thanks!

J.P.Casainho, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
