muon-updater fails to authorize update on KDE desktop

Bug Description

On the KDE desktop, when the notification for new software updates comes up and one clicks on the notification icons, the muon-updater interface starts. But when clicking on "Apply Changes", muon-updater pauses for a few seconds and then shows the message:
This operation cannot continue since proper authorization was not provided

At no point there was a dialog requesting any kind of authorization, so I'm not sure what's going on - but I can't get the software updated except using the terminal.
