Bug Description

This seems to be the same as Bug #455954 on the same laptop (Averatec 3280) as the previous report on earlier versions of Ubuntu. I am running xubuntu 11.10 beta updated through today.

Once the system locked up, after selecting the AntSpotlight screensaver, I had to power off, reboot, enter a text console, and remove the xscreensaver-gl package, in order to disable this screensaver. I re-installed xscreensaver-gl in order to create this report with ubuntu-bug. I am currently running xscreensaver but not gnome-screensaver.

For comparison, I just booted an 11.04 'natty' live CD and tried the AntSpotlight screensaver on that. The same thing happens - the system locks up a few seconds after the ant rotates around 60 degrees. I then installed apt-show-versions to see what versions of xscreensaver-gl and the openchrome display driver are installed from the 11.04 CD:

root@ubuntu:~# apt-show-versions xscreensaver-gl
xscreensaver-gl/natty uptodate 5.12-0ubuntu3
root@ubuntu:~# apt-show-versions | grep openchrome
xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/natty uptodate 1:0.2.904+svn916-1build1

Hey peterbe,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

This problem is definitely still happening on this Averatec laptop. I reinstalled xscreensaver-gl, version 5.14-1ubuntu1, carefully set the delay for the screensaver to 10 minutes, and selected AntSpotlite. Within a few minutes the system completely locked up. I had to shut the system down with the power switch to continue.

After rebooting, I clicked on the xfce Settings Manager, selected the Screensaver Icon, and quickly selected another screensaver to keep the system from locking up again.

This is now the released version of xubuntu 11.10.

This situation has not changed in the past 60 days - the bug still occurs in the released version.
