Bug Description

Trouble starts at point 3. I can best illustrate this with images, so they will follow.

1. When I change the sound volume using function keys on my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge, the volume changes in both the indicator and OSD.
2. When I press the mute function key, both the indicator and OSD mute the sound.
3. When I press mute again to unmute, the indicator stays in the mute state but the OSD shows the unmute state.
4. The audio is still muted for real, so the indicator is right and the OSD is misinformed by some evil piece of code in a raincoat.

Ofcourse, I expected the audio to unmute. I like the OSD to be right. After all, I did press the (un)mute button.

5. Workaround: Open the sound indicator and slide the volume slider up. Now the audio is unmuted again.

Do you have HDA Intel card/chip? In my Kubuntu 11.10 I have a similar problem. Muting works ok, but unmuting not. After unmuting I have to toggle also both the Front and Headphones switch:

$ amixer sset Front toggle; amixer sset Headphone toggle

After that the sound is restored. I do not have indicator-sound installed, so I suppose my problem is a kernel bug in snd-hda-intel module or so.

Yes, it is mentioned, but how generic is that description?

$ lspci | grep -i audio
00:01.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Wrestler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6250/6310]
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)

When trying out a keyboard with a mute key, it has the opposite effect. The OSD responds, but no actual mute/unmute is taking place.

Not sure where exactly the bug is, but it's buggy somewhere. Just hope a bunch of people click on 'this bug affects me too' so it wil be looked into.

If it is a kernel but for that specific module, it's enough that those cards use the same module. Please take a look at the Bug #876913.

You are right. Looks similar, not entirely but maybe the mute-part and OSD-part are two bugs that seem like one bug. I will add my description there.

I can't reproduce it on 13.10.

Unfortunately I sold the Thinkpad Edge laptop.
I cannot reproduce on my desktop but I don't know if it was an issue on this desktop back then.

So this can either be closed, or wait for someone with Thinkpad Edge to verify.
