Bug Description

After downloading and installing the latest security update as of 6th October 2011 the graphics no longer work. The Ubuntu background is displayed but if I move my mouse pointer, pointers are left as a permanent trail. The task bars at the top and bottom of the screen do not display and the icons for applications do not display.

I am using a Compaq Evo 1.7Ghz intel P4 with 750Meg of Ram and a Dell 19" TFT monitor.
Every thing works fine on a clean install of 10.04.3 LTD from the live CD but as soon as I update the system fails to boot correctly. I have disabled all updates until the bug is fixed.
